What 2021 Has to Offer

Intro stuff

The Revolution Will Be Livestreamed

The planets Saturn & Uranus dance in a tight 90-degree pattern throughout the entire year of 2021, and this astrological event is often associated with a lot of action and movement. Revolution, rebellion, and reform are the themes of these events happening in February, June, and December 2021. We will no doubt see some huge changes globally and locally, and when we take a look at your birthchart we can see the personal impacts in your life.

Jupiter Shining

Jupiter spent practically the entire year of 2020 in Capricorn, a sign in which it is said to struggle more than others– can you relate? Jupiter starts off 2021 in Aquarius, which should provide a refreshing feeling, but the real treat for this planet is when it enters Pisces May through July. Pisces is a place of great effectiveness for Jupiter, and the planet’s benevolent grace will shine. Step aside, 2020… it’s time for a change!

Summer & Winter Eclipses

We will also see the last eclipses in the signs of Gemini & Sagittarius in 2021, closing some chapters of new growth or sudden change that have been developing since Summer of 2020. Not everyone is impacted by eclipses personally, although looking at your birthchart can help determine whether these changes or opportunities for growth are calling your number.

This month’s offering features the Jupiter-Saturn Cycle! Jupiter and Saturn will form a conjunction in December 2020, the first time in 20 years. Take advantage of this November Special and book your reading today at the discounted price of $75.00!

Letting Go & Flying in a New Direction

Sports drink memes aside, we’re in the midst of Mercury retrograde, and I think it’s important to talk a bit about what that means! At the very least I want to take the opportunity to address some of the typical questions people have about this astro phenomena. As a child born right before a Mercury retrograde, I definitely come from the perspective that life mostly continues on as usual for folx. There’s no need to panic or get worried about this, and knowledge gives you tools to prepare!

What even is a Mercury Retrograde

When astrologers say that “Mercury is retrograde”, that usually means that if you were to chart the course of Mercury across the skies every night, you’d notice it appearing to move “backwards”, in the opposite direction of the other planets. I’m sure that any humans who’ve spent time studying the stars might have freaked out about this at first, but if you study them long enough you learn that this is normal. In fact, Mercury has a retrograde phase 3 times each year, because of how close it is to the sun!

Mercury represents communication, information, small details, and travel. So if you think about Mercury slowing down, retracing its steps “backwards”, then going forward and resuming its path across the sky, we can apply this metaphorically to the topics Mercury represents. Communication can get swirly, you might need to go back and forth a lot over small details, or your travel plans may get disrupted or delayed. Technology also seems to be disrupted during this time, and in general any little delays can stack up to create a lot of frustration.

Repeating this cycle every four months or so means that Mercury retrograde tends to occur once every four signs of the Zodiac– this year it starts off in Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio. If you’re familiar with the nature of these three signs, you might recall that they’re all Water signs! What a cool pattern, right? The Water signs are associated with our emotional life or with literal water. When you layer some of these meanings onto the frustrations, delays, etc. I discussed, you can see how this can make for a very emotionally turbulent time.

I’ve got stuff to do– how long will this last?

The first Mercury retrograde of 2020 follows this cycle:

February 2, 2020 – Mercury first covers the part of Pisces that it will later retrace. Things that happen during this period of time will likely need to be revisited, repeated, or redone. Yay.

February 16, 2020 – Mercury slows down, and on this day it appears to stand still in the sky. After this, it retraces it’s steps back through Pisces, and is said to be properly “retrograde” (not “in retrograde” or submersed in any sports drink liquids, just dipped back into the Piscean waters).

February 25, 2020 – Mercury gets swallowed by the Sun. Not really– but astrologers say it is in the “heart of the sun”, or “cazimi”. This means it’s at the same degree of the Zodiac as the sun! This is a turning point, and many issues will see major shifting in a direction toward resolution.

March 9, 2020 – Mercury slows down and appears to stand still again, this time turning back to its normal “direct” motion. This means it travels that same stretch of the Zodiac it covered twice already, one last time before moving on. Third time’s a charm… literally! Things get resolved, for better or for worse.

March 29, 2020 – Mercury finally leaves the area of the Zodiac it’s been crossing over and over again, and will move on to new topics, retrograde-free. Until Summer. Yay.

So, as you can see, the entire process lasts two months! And this repeats twice more in 2020! Rather than spending half the year panicking, let’s talk about what to actually expect from a Mercury retrograde period.

What should I actually expect from Mercury Retrograde?

I asked for questions to write about, and y’all came up with some great ones! Let’s see what we can learn about together.

How do I avoid putting my life on hold?

One piece of traditional advice from astrologers is not to start things during a Mercury retrograde period. While I’d agree that if you have a choice not to do something during this time, you shouldn’t, that’s not realistic for every choice. Also, on the spectrum of “oh god, oh god, what have I done” to “best life choice ever”, any actions taken during a Mercury retrograde are smack dab near the middle, along with all the other average actions you take over the course of your life. Mercury is the smallest planet, with the shortest orbit and some seriously short-lived impacts, on the whole. So the vast majority of us aren’t going to screw everything up based on one Mercury Retrograde.

What I have noticed about starting things during Mercury retrograde is that you tend to experience the following:

Delays! Everything seems to take longer, so the time between making a choice to do something and actually getting to do it is longer.

Clerical Errors! It’s not that you shouldn’t sign contracts or start a job during this time, but triple check your paperwork– even the smallest details might be comically wrong.

Repetition! If you’re interviewing for a job and you are asked to come back in or re-do an interview, this can actually be a good thing during a Mercury Retrograde. It could mean they’re taking their time or that the process has changed and they want to take a closer look at you as a candidate.

Surviving a Mercury Retrograde period really just requires patience and a change in expectations. Listen to the signs that tell you to slow down, if only so you avoid making a mistake or missing something important.

Am I dealing with a Twin Flame?

If you’re not familiar with the concept of a Twin Flame, the “tl;dr” version is that it’s like a soulmate but kind of toxic. Like– y’all are constantly playing the game of “they love me, they love me not”. This kind of question can come up a lot around Mercury Retrograde because another traditional piece of advice is that you can see your exes coming back into the picture. Receiving messages or phone calls from people you never thought (or maybe even wanted) to see again seems to be more likely!

If you’re having trouble deciding whether the relationship you have with someone is healthy or has healthy boundaries, this is a decision I’d definitely wait to act on until after the Retrograde period has passed. Use this time to gather more information, or take the time to talk about boundaries or expectations. Or scroll through their Instagram feed to remember all the things you love and the things you love to hate about them (just be careful not to accidentally “like” their super-old photos– what a classic Mercury Retrograde thing to do).

Since this retrograde happens mostly in Pisces, if you have any of the following in your chart you might be more prone to issues in this area during THIS particular Mercury Retrograde:

Virgo Rising – Pisces is your 7th house of Relationships… so Mercury is asking you to revisit issues from your relationships. Or, rather, Mercury is giving you the opportunity to do so, if you choose.

Mercury in your 7th House – If you normally have Mercury in your 7th house in your birth chart, Mercury automatically becomes more important in your closest relationships.

Pisces or Sagittarius Rising – Based on your chart, Mercury is responsible for your 7th house affairs, so it tends to the needs of your relationships. With Mercury distracted by its retrograde period, you might feel the impact on your relationships around this time.

At the end of the day, remember that you have the right to set boundaries in any relationship! If you’re looking for a cool, queer/inclusive resource on setting boundaries or making decisions about whether you should be with someone or not, this could help: The Relationship Bill of Rights, from More Than Two.

How does this impact my health?

It’s not just exes that tend to come back during Mercury Retrograde periods… our chronic health issues can come back to haunt us, as well. At least these episodes tend to be shorter and less acute than usual, for most! Mercury isn’t typically associated with health, but there might be a few different chart placements that could get activated by this Retrograde:

Libra Rising – Pisces is your 6th house of health issues, so Mercury is asking you to review diagnoses, new or old information about your health, or communicate with others around your health.

Mercury in your 6th House – If Mercury is in your 6th house in your birth chart, then Mercury will be related to your health more closely.

Aries or Capricorn Rising – Mercury is responsible for your 6th house affairs, so just like with relationships, a distracted Mercury will take away some of your normal resources you use to manage your health, temporarily.

Moon in Pisces – If you have the Moon in Pisces in your chart, you also have a health connection there, so you could be prone to issues coming up during this Mercury Retrograde.

It’s important to note that NONE of this is professional medical advice. I am not a doctor. So, yeah, make sure you actually consult people other than me, especially if you’re having intense pain or suspect there’s a deeper issue. Like, seriously, take care of yourself!

How can I learn more?

If you’re not sure what your Rising sign is, or where your Mercury or Moon are, or if you have literally any other question, let me know! I love working with people on their charts, especially Mercury (I have a strong mercury in my own chart!) It’s Taurus Season, y’all! This is where momentum from previous projects picks up and really carries through over the next month! The Sun breaks through the cold ground, carrying the heat from Aries to permeate and wake everything up. I don’t know about you, but the Sun in Aries was pretty great for me! My creative energies were on fire! Taurus isn’t quite as great for the Sun, but there is such a high from last month that we need a bit of a come-down, anyway. We get the Sun in Taurus on 4/20, and it will stay there until May 21.

Sun in Taurus

If you know your Rising Sign, you can use the chart below to find out the area the Sun is transiting over the next four weeks! It’s probably not the same as your Sun Sign, so find out here: https://www.astrosofa.com/horoscope/ascendant

In general, the Sun shines a giant spotlight into this area of your life. Sometimes this helps you gain recognition, but you also can’t hide anything during this time!

Shock!

We immediately see action from the Sun in Taurus as it aligns with Uranus in the early degrees of the sign. Uranus is a planet of breakthrough & breakdowns, revolution, and shock! In this earthy sign, this looks more like breakthroughs, where we see the physical manifestations of new ideas or concepts previously thought unimaginable. This conjunction occurs on Monday, April 22nd.

We really wrestle with the implications of this shock for the next couple weeks, and it’s not until the Sun connects with Neptune on May 8th that we see a way to turn things around. The reality of our situation can be overwhelming, and we need a bit of imagination to snap out of it!

The big turning point, where we make use of this new situation or shock, happens around May 11/13. The Sun receives Saturn & Pluto, who are flirting with the South Node in Capricorn. This big bull energy helps us carry through and make something significant out of what might otherwise be seen as a nuisance. Taurus is all about making the best of a situation, and remaining humble!

Into the Frying Pan

The best way to navigate the Sun in Taurus? Normally staying grounded is always a good thing, but this time around we’ve got to stay limber to avoid that first lightning strike from Uranus! This looks like staying humble and remembering that things that are grounded last longer– much of the shock will pass, eventually. We take what we need and turn the rest into something useful!

Focus on what you can do to keep your momentum moving forward. Setbacks are still something you can work with, and delays are opportunities to slow down and inspect progress!

How quickly can we forget the Mercury Retrograde of March 2019? Only as fast as Mercury travels through the fiery sign of Aries! On April 17, Mercury finally exits the scene of the crime and makes a run through Aries until May 6th. Like a cat recognizing the local presence of a cucumber, Mercury bolts as far away as possible! We get to see this journey in the morning skies as Mercury makes a rare appearance.

Mercury in Aries

If you know your Rising Sign, you can use the chart below to find out the area Mercury is transiting over the next three weeks! It’s probably not the same as your Sun Sign, so find out here: https://www.astrosofa.com/horoscope/ascendant

In general, Mercury increases awareness, perception or curiosity in this area of your life. This doesn’t mean you see the truth– but you certainly find your focus on this area.

Mad Dash!

The first week of this transit sees Mercury regaining its speed after the SLOW retrograde motion. We feel brighter, more mentally agile, and certainly find the speed we’ve been missing in our lives! Normally Aries can be a harsh sign… but with Mars in Mercury’s sign of Gemini, there is a compatibility that increases the power of both planets! By the last week of April, Mercury finds a pace that’s lightning fast and quick-witted.

The only obstacles in Mercury’s path are the impending rays from Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn. These mighty heroes have been battling with the South Node, and helping us eliminate that which doesn’t spark joy– on a cosmic level! This kind of transit might normally put huge roadblocks in our path, but this temporary alliance with Mars (and a little luck from Jupiter in Sagittarius), helps keep things moving along. What could be a big barrier for us on May 1st & 2nd really are only signposts that say “no parking”, meaning we need to keep on keeping on!

Facts & Figures

It’s easy to get so caught up in fleeing our recent mistakes or mishaps that we throw caution to the wind. Trying to catch up to stay on top of deadlines sometimes comes at the cost of quality, and where quality matters, this can be detrimental! Slow down enough to ensure you’ve got what you need to meet your goals, not just in the short-run, but also long-term.

Above all, recognize that Mercury quickly heads toward the next thing, and whatever comes now in this area of your life is temporary! We won’t see another retrograde cycle for a while… let’s worry about that in July. For now, make room for the warmth and energy that Mercury in Aries grants us!

Sun in Aries 2019: Setting the Pace

The astrological New Year, of sorts, begins with the Sun entering Aries! This is the spark that lights the fuel for the entire next 12 months. The Sun gives us dry heat in Aries for the first couple of weeks. It enters Aries on March 20 and stays there through April 20. Things take off soon enough, though! Aries is said to be the sign of “Exaltation” for the Sun, where it is recognized with the highest honor! This is a productive and illuminating time for all!

Action

The build up of the Sun in Aries for the first two weeks allows us to see what we might be setting up this month. By the time the Aries New Moon occurs on April 5th, we really get a sense of what this month holds for us, at least in terms of the big themes!

The real action happens mid-April as the Sun encounters the challenging square aspects from Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn. The Sun really doesn’t lose any momentum– it acknowledges these challenges, but receives a big reinforcement from Jupiter on April 14th when it completes a trine aspect! This series of planetary aspects represents a simple stumble, but the Sun keep right on going!

Out of the Heat

The best way to navigate the Sun in Aries? A strong offense that’s clean! Take advantage of the sublime energy available to you, but don’t feed into the hot temper that can also come along with it!

If you’re especially frustrated by the events happening in your life, use this time to focus on what’s really important. We get some other opportunities during this time to cut things out of our life that no longer serve us, so having something positive, bright, and shiny really helps!

The planet associated with drive, passion, and energy has not done well in the grounded sign of Taurus. With Mars’ transit into Gemini at the end of March (3/31/19), we get a decidedly different boost! We start gaining the energy and momentum to push ourselves faster, something that we’ve missed for the past 6 weeks. Mars is also the first planet to enter Gemini in a while and becomes a trailblazer for #geminiseason in May! We get to spice/stir things up in an area of our lives that may have been a little lackluster!

Mars in Gemini

If you know your Rising Sign, you can use the chart below to find out the area Mars is transiting over the next six weeks! It’s probably not the same as your Sun Sign, so find out here: https://www.astrosofa.com/horoscope/ascendant

In general, Mars has a separating or cutting action. This can help us cut things out we don’t need, but a double-edged sword can hurt in the process!

Momentum

For the first 3 weeks of Mars in Gemini, we don’t actually see much action. This might feel like energy you don’t know exactly what to do with, yet. But, with the arrival of Spring, there’s a plethora of things we could use energy for!

Things really heat up once Mercury (the ruler of Gemini) moves into Mars-ruled Aries. This “mutual reception” empower BOTH Mars and Mercury, and really creates the electricity needed to spark something new in Gemini! Mercury moves into Aries on April 17th.

Remember the Retrograde?

The last 3 weeks of Mars’ time in Gemini really sees the action. Neptune, maybe nostalgic for some action, squares Mars and brings back memories of the March Madness that was the Mercury retrograde! (At the time of writing this, Mercury is still retrograde, so it’s FRESH in my mind, now!)

This Neptune square on 4/27 really pushes us toward the new energy that’s been building up, and when Mercury makes an exact aspect to Mars from fiery Aries, the ignition is felt strongly! Over the next couple weeks we see new action happen in the Gemini area of your life that Mars is in. Venus follows suit mid-May, sealing this new momentum up, but not before Jupiter checks things out with an opposition on May 5th.

All this is to say that whatever area of your life Mars is heating up really sees the boiling point in May. This brings a new awareness of how the last two months of your life have been building up to this new point! Mars in Gemini helps us see clearly because of cutting out the distractions, and this is the new insight that propels us forward.

Mars leaves Gemini on May 15th. Keep an eye out for an article about the transit into the choppy waters of Cancer!
